Getting crazy like Tarzan? Wonder if he could swing while firing a rocket launcher with the other hand.

It's that time again people so sharpen your wit and read between the lines. We've got another reader inspired issue to throw around the room, and it all winds up in your lap as to when the ball stops bouncing. Read on and don't miss a beat, it's from someone who gave their name as "asfd asdf" but that's kind of boring, so I think I'll rip his other identity from his e-mail address and we can just call him/her "u8poo". It's just got so much more to offer. This week's rant is about the offhand hooks...dig it!
Ok, I'd like to discuss offhand hooks, some people love them and some
hate them. I feel that offhand hooks are more for newbies, I feel every
advantage in a game must have a disadvantage. With hooks the advantage
added mobility, and with off hand hooks you have no disadvantage.
Grapples like in Vanilla Q2 CTF aren't off hand and are treated as a weapon. To have the advantage of extra mobility, you get the disadvantage of
being able to fire while using the grapple. This balances things out
more, and you don't have people using the grapple extensively.
With offhand hooks you get mods like Lithium where dodging rockets/rails is almost
use of the hook for movement. In OSP DM if you have offhand hooks on, it can
hamper game play a lot. This is caused by an opponent making a tactical
error, and being able to hook his/her way out of it instead of fighting.
example of this would be in q2dm1 The Edge, you opponent makes the
mistake of going to lower RL with you in hot pursuit, and then uses hook
get out of it. If this had been a GX 1vs1 game you for sure would of won
Offhand hooks also tend to make game play more uneven than it
already is for HPBs vs LPBs. This is because a LPB can hook back and
fast in mid air and stay suspended, this rapid movement is almost
to kill if your ping is over 200. Then the HPB has a major disadvantage
again, normally a HPB can take cover by either running out of room or
up an elevator. If a HPB can run, he has the option of fighting battles
has the tactical advantage going into, this evens up HPB vs LPB games
If you have offhand hooks, the LPB can easily chase the HPB anywhere
he goes and kills the HPB's chance to engage in a fight where he
has any advantage (surprise, elevation, weapon, etc.). I myself do not like
mods that have offhand hooks enabled, in CTF the grapple can cause loss of
HPB vs LPB compatibility, but not to the same degree. This is because the CTF
grapple is an item and it takes time to switch to it and back, also the
end is not a laser that hits the walls almost immediately, thus adding
another time loss to the pursuer. There for it forces the persuer into a
more tactical chase with heading the opponent off at different parts of the
rather than hooking up a wall to catch an opponent that just took an
This is the end of my babble, sorry for any and all
grammar/spelling/punctuation errors. :) Let the hate mail begin!
Being the wonderful human being that I am, I went through u8poo's with the old spellchecker from hell so he wouldn't be too embarrassed. Now it's time to toss it around and see just who has what to say on the subject of the offhand hook in Quake(s). Let's give Spyke first shot at this one before he starts yelling that we always leave him to the last.
Offhand hooks? Hrm.. I've never really been a fan of grappling hooks; I
think they're just another toy to mess around with, and I not being a CTF
addict, don't think they're required for fun CTF play. However, that being
said, grappling hooks are something that gives a distinct advantage; you can
get somewhere other people can't, faster. To have an offhand hook, you have
more of an advantage, because you still have a weapon available. How fair is
that? If you answered "not very", you've hit the nail on the head. Offhand
hooks are for namby pamby wussy little fruitbats. Down with offhand hooks!
Well that's a stance for ya. Love it or not, that's Spyke's take on the matter. Now let's hand the baton off to Ash for a look into the Kansas side of life. Take it Dorothy!
I personally have never been a fan of a grappling hook at all. I was one of
the few that were very happy with id's decision to not include the grapple
in Quake 3: Arena. However, when checking over "asdf asdf's" (Pappy likes u8poo better here) rant, and
reading his points about the pitfalls of the off hand grapple versus the
weapon-like grapple, I think I agree. It's not that I don't think an
offhand grapple could be fun, but as asdf asdf pointed out, it fundamentally
changes the movement in the game. It's kind of like Tribes with the jetpack
thingy. It's not that a jetpack isn't fun, but it just makes the game
completely different. I feel the same way about the offhand grapple. I
love the game play of the Quake games so much already, and so I don't see
any reason to change it to an offhand grapple dominated game.
Next up, more PQ opinions, including Pappy himself...
