The Quake Community
Are we losing the quality community we used to enjoy?
  — by Pappy-R and the The Big Fuzzy Rowdies

The word you used that has been lost is "Community". Cheaters are not a part of a community, they have no dignity, no "Gamers Code of Ethics". They work on their own and don't care what others in the room say. How many times have you joined a random game and when you frag someone they call you a faggot or bitch? Or if you win the map, they whine and scream obscenities at you. Or if the whole room tells someone to stop camping and he just tells everyone to fuck off?

These people are not part of a Community. They are lonely pathetic people who frag when Mommy goes to bed and make it miserable for others. They are also probably the ones who feed poisoned meat to the neighbor's dog. They take pleasure in spoiling it for everyone else. This problem hasn't gotten bigger in proportion though, the gaming community has grown.

In retaliation though, there are those of us old time Quakers that have maintained the Community. We have our own groups that have a code of honour in gaming and we run our own servers and organize our own frag events. We don't let llamas play and ruin it for us and we keep the game friendly. That's all you can do.

Look at the Half-Life Community, almost 6000 servers, 20,000 + players. How do you keep from running into llamas and cheaters there? You make your own servers and break off from the big group. Build a Community of gamers who still care. That is what PlanetQuake is all about! Rock!

A little more flame in this reply, I think we hit a sensitive area with L2P. Actually, I know we did. Now it's my turn to spout off and I hope I can keep it to the size limits I gave to the other contributors. Let's see.

I have to first say that I agree with points from each of the other members of the team. Before I go on and on though I'd like to point out a bit of simple math that counts with any city, community or group of humans. The larger the population, the larger the population of buttheads will be. More people simply means more buttheads...it's that simple.

I do have to add that I've run into very few cheaters in Quake III. It was more in Quake 2 and when Quake 1 was the hottest FPS out there we could list cheaters openly on our clan pages. There were that few of them. The lacking in the community that I see is mostly in attitude. People seem to either hate to lose or feel that they have some killer rep they have to defend to the death. Even if that means whinning about not winning a match. It was that reason alone that stopped me from playing Quake 2 1v1 games totally. I've since gotten back into it in Quake III and have seen a slight improvment in attitudes.

I guess I'm not agreeing with DarkAngel_V1 totally here but I'm not bashing his rant either. The community has changed and some of it's not for the better, but I'm far from giving up on the gamers out there that not only deserve my respect but my community efforts. To the wonder-weinies out there who get some odd sense of pleasure, accomplishment of sick thrill from fragging without skill and honour...grow the hell up or watch your ass. We're watching, waiting and we will prevail. To all those that have played fair and fragged my sorry ass with skill and a smile...GG!
