Nick Profanity
A plea to stop the sexual and racial nickname slurs.
  — by Pappy-R and the "The Two Few Crew"

Life's a bitch, and then you write about it. That's the theme for the PQ Rants n'Raves, so belly up to the bar and sing us your tale of woe. This week is another rant (where are the raves?) and the topic is again dealing with Web manners and the habits we see.

Coming straight to us from his comfy chair is Sunder and his statement on the language in online gaming. No, it's not a game censorship piece or anything so dramatic. Settle back and fill you pens with poison, it's time to flail wildly and hope we hit close to the mark.

Before I get started, I would just like to say that I am not at all against profanity, but c'mon all you people in the community, why do you have to put profanity in your screen names. I know a lot of people out there think they are funny when they give themselves a dirty name, but to most of us adults, you make yourselves look like idiots. Why not come up with something witty or, just intimidating. For example I was playing CTF4 the other day, and there was one guy named Juggernaut, and then over in the corner was a guy named Shit-n-Gibbles. What the hell is up with that. Or names that contain racial slurs (im not going to give examples because i dont want to offend anyone out there) but im sure you have all seen some example. I mean does it really give you pleasure to put a racial slur in your name, or a dirty name that some little kid might see while hes playing the game? Dont get me wrong I get a laugh out of seeing a funny or witty name, but some of this stuff is going too far. In my opinion if you have to put something profane, sexual, or racial, in your name, you just need to grow up not just a little bit, but a lot. I dont want to join a server and see names like Shit Eater, or FuckFace, or I F%$*#@ your mom. Names like that get old, and it makes me want to stop playing quake all together.

I would hate to be playing quake with my son, and have some asshole (because thats what you people are) with a crappy name join the server and start screaming profanities, or torchering the other players with cheezy profain phrases that you so carefully bound to keys so you can press them over and over and over and over. Your just making yourself look stupid, and your annoying the hell out of the rest of us. STOP IT, STOP IT, STOP IT, STOP IT! All you players that put this kind of stuff into your game, keep this in mind. You're not a part of our community, and no one likes you. And your probably will never have any success in any other gaming community with the TRASH that you bring to them. You people are like maggots, you just take and take and take and you never give back to the community.

Well thats all I have to say to the trashy people out there. Thx for reading my rant, and I hope that this will steer at least one person away from putting trash in their screen names.

Fragged before you knew it

  — Sunder

Well thanks for taking the time to pen the rant sunder, but I have to say that I think "Shit-n-Gibbles" is alot funnier and less profane than alot I've seen. But don't listen to me, especially since it's not my turn, let's give Love2Play first go at this one. Before I toss it over to L2P, I should state that we're a little light this week for participation. Hellchick has chosen to wander out of the office and scream at traffic for a few days, but she will be back on duty next time. Now take it L2P.

Ok, I'm gonna give it up now, I'm an "Moderator" on *Popular Gaming Browser* ( GameSpy Arcade ). I can tell you exactly why there is the usage and the naming with all the profanity. It's called Average age 13. Now I'm not insulting the pre-teen and teen group, I'm am merely stating a fact that it is that age group which finds it absolutely necessary to swear in every sentence and use it in their game name. They say hello in a chatroom by saying "hello fuckers". And if challenged in anyway, they implement the use of every single vulgarity listed in Websters on one sentence that has no intelligent meaning at all. For some reason, somewhere along the way someone created the impression that being a gamer meant being a foul-mouthed violence loving moro....I mean tough guy.

I see 3500-5000 gamers per hour on said *gaming browser* ( GameSpy Arcade ) and it is constant. But these are also people who when they test the language filters include the word "penis" in their test. They actually think the word penis would be filtered as profanity! So you have to put the person in the right place in your own mind... on ignore like you used to ignore your little brother when you were young. To me it's a matter of maturity and education. AssRaper is not cute, nor is FagKiller. But for some reason, they think so. To me it's a pathetic analogy of today's youth. It shows lack of character, upbringing and a lack of respect for other gamers. I think it really leads us back to the whole cheaters discussion, people with no lives, lonely and no parenting involved. But if we old timers keep on it, we may have at least a small impact and bring some dignity back to the game.

Ooooh, did I sound too much like a mom? Well I am one, so suck it!

  — Love2Play

Yes I put those links in there! I did it because I can do it and none of you can do anything about it! Well actually if you're smart you'll click them and see what community trends Love2Play was talking about. Although it's not all bad, this problem does exist, but before I start my section, which is tempting, I'll give Ash his time. And now...the Kansas vote.

I'm kind of borderline on this rant. I definitely respect where Sunder is coming from here, there is something inherently childish about nicknames like he describes. However, I really don't mind the profane nicknames that much at all. The only time that it seems inappropriate to me is when there are racial and/or ethnic slurs in the nicks. I'm just not comfortable with racial and ethnic slandering, that's pretty taboo for me. However, sexually comic names usually get me laughing, and I still chuckle when I think about how many times I've been railed by "mY 0wn p3nIS".

But definitely, just for the sake of self worth, don't anyone out there actually make their "real" nick something sexually explicit or racially slanderous. If you're goofing off, and just don't want to "represent"... sure, name yourself whatever you feel the need to name yourself. But also make sure your sportsmanship and trash talk doesn't go into the gutter with your nick.

  — Ash

Well I'm actually surprised by Ash's response to this one. Not that he's a foul mouthed little git or anything. In fact, I expected a much stronger stance. Oh well, it's good that this isn't predictable, and I do respect his points. Perhaps being the youngest in this trio just means he hasn't grown weary from random acts of stupidity. Can you guess where I'll be going with my response to this week's rant? If not, wake the hell up and read on.

Next up, more PQ opinions, including Pappy himself...
