Q3:TA...Loved?
Talkin' about TA's success.
  — by Pappy-R and the PQ Perps

There's the heart right there. Is there enough good, new content in Team Arena to make it worth having and paying for. We have another "yes" from Ash, and now we pass the torch to Will who's gonna just break it all down for ya. No pressure...take it Will. :-)

When it comes to Team Arena, I ride the fence. On one hand, I absolutely love to play One Flag, and I even like the maps. On the other hand, I don't play much due to the lack of servers. So it's a catch twenty-two. Do I think TA would have done better as a free download? Naturally. Let's face it - thirty bucks is a bit steep and not a lot of people are gonna shell that kinda dough out when there are so many free mods that are, in my opinion, even better than TA. Would TA have effected the longevity of Quake III? I don't think so. I think the mod and mapping community dominates the add-ons that id puts out. Historically, taking Rocket Arena for example, more players are awaiting the community mods than they are the add-on packs. Here's my final point then I'll shut up. If a person has a preference to a specific map, gametype, mod, competition rule, whatever it might be, we all have the option to "host our own" so to speak. I believe that as a hardcore gamer, if you're going to take from the community, give to the community. So start a TA server with duel maps. Keep that sucker flowin' and maybe it'll catch on.

Not quite as heated as I hoped to see considering Will gave us a "STFU", but it'll have to do. Now it's my turn, and we're still running under the assumption here that the content in Team Arena is enjoyable, and so far, nobody from the crew has screamed for their money back. Here's my rip at the steak.

Yes when there's a free pack for another game out there, that will be brought into the issue, and I think that if Team Arena was a free download, there would be no standard Quake III servers out there. The new content and code is well worth the effort, and I love playing any Quake III through Team Arena. More options, more HUD/UI features and functions...it's just great!

How do I feel about the price tag? Let me first say that being in Canada my prices were 80 bucks for Q3A when it hit the shelves, and Team Arena was 50 when it was first out. That means the pack was over half the cost of the original game which actually has most of the content and game engine. That's kinda steep, and while I don't want my money back for any of the copies I bought, I think the cost was a bit high. If the cost had been lowered, we'd be seeing more online TA action, and the sales would have made the venture more of a success for the developer and publisher.

Just so I get all of my say in here, I don't think the powerups screw up the gameplay in TA. I did at first, but once you learn the strengths and weaknesses of all the new treats, it's all good.
