I remember a time not so long ago when the gaming community was full of helpful people and in general very pleasant people to be around, there were a few assholes out to ruin your fun but they were few and far between. Those days seem to be over, currently in the online gaming scene it's commonplace to see comments based on people's race, religion and/or sexual preference, this is unacceptable. I've been running game servers and a website for game admins for over three years now, I guess I've seen my share of poor morality in the online gaming scene with all the cheat sites, etc. we have helped shut down.
My question is where did our community go?
Is it the proliferation of online gaming?
More gamers means more assholes?
Or is it:
Our community is so afraid to police itself and be labeled as anti-free speech that we watch our community go further down into the cess pool of degradation.
When I started playing Doom2 via Coax and then Quake (the original), the online the community was smaller yet more friendly. In Quake2 it started out being similar in nature but in the latter part of Quake2's popularity a few individuals that hung around our servers were known to be 'mouths' and used frequent religious, racist, and homophobic slurs which they termed as 'trash-talk', they insisted this is part of their community and were frequently kicked for their behavior! A couple years after the release of Quake3 is where we now sit. The online gaming community has now become inundated with racist, anti-religious, homophobic, and general hate remarks, they are now a mainstay and common thing on corporate sponsored forums and everyday banter in irc and in online game lingo. Am I the only one that thinks this is unacceptable?
Maybe some of these gamers are too young to understand tolerance of people's differences or they just do not understand the implications of the words they use and type, either way something is totally wrong with our gaming community or even worse if it's any indication of how these individuals truly feel! Calling someone a lucky bitch or the like is trash talk. Calling someone a flaming homosexual Jew is just preaching hatred and ignorance.
Trash talk is one thing, preaching hatred and showing your ignorance is another story all together.
These are common topics and posts in a popular Q3 Forum and in irc:
H0T mAN SeCKs!!
Yet another analy penetrated without the use of lube!
He's a fagg0t jew
he's a pole smoker
Waz up niggaz?
This 'IS NOT' appropriate behavior for people and friends in my house and community. I know several people that are offended when people say things about their ethical background, and it's not meant as a personal insult but becomes one because the person making the comment has 'NO IDEA' that the individual they are speaking of is truly a black individual, a jew, or a homosexual. Do we want our community to be known as arrogant, ignorant children who flame people for simple questions and aren't part of our clique? Or do we want to show people how cool it is to be like us and show them how cool the games are and how comfortable the community feels.
Again, this shouldn't be allowed in our forums or our irc. Period.
I am done putting up with it. The corporate figures that host these forums have shown they don't seem to be moved by the hatred being preached in their forums. In IRC and in-game on our servers 'we' can help police this behavior.
Only 'we' can show or tell people that we differ from those views stated above.
I am not alone in feeling that there are less and less gamers playing for fun, and more and more people out to just ruin the fun for others. I see no fun in calling people a racist, homophobic name when I frag them. That's not fun, it's simply rude and immoral. You do not know me, my race, or my sexual preference and you have no clue to base your comment on, so you can keep your rude comments to yourself if you can't come up with something that isn't just ignorance and hate. If you're not intelligent enough to call me something other then 'ghey' or 'homo' then come back when you can frag like an adult.
The easiest way you can view this is similar to harassment laws at work, it's not what you say but how what you say is perceived to other individuals, (possibly not even the one you were intending the remark). If you wouldn't say it to your mother's face, to your boss at work, or to a close friend, girlfriend, wife, don't say it online or in a public game server.
Unfortunately, I cannot control the behavior of thousands of gamers and the online community, I can however control myself and my actions. I have given over three years to providing content for admins and helping individuals whenever and where ever I can. I have gotten a lot back from the community. However, I 'can' take myself out of this community and move elsewhere that does not have the same immoral behavior that is tolerated currently in our community.
You are going to stop playing online multiplayer games because of this?
No. I just choose to play with people that I know and trust and have similar views as I do.
You are going to quit frequenting irc and the forums that advocate this behavior?
Yes and No, I have already stopped posting any longer on one of these forums due to the maintenance and unsupervised behavior of the admins in charge of those forums. I have advised the parent company and webmasters of those forums and never heard back, according to the admins of that forum, those emails were just forwarded to them to laugh at my request. I will however still post and visit channels that do not accept or tolerate the above behavior. I can't control you and your behavior but I can control where I spend my time and hard work.
Yes, some folks will be pissed off and I understand this. I do not apologize for it, this is what morality is all about. A lot of people I considered friends have been effected by my decisions. I am hurt every time one of my considered friends uses one of the listed statements from above.
You make decisions in life, I simply choose to say no, this will not continue.
Controlling what happens in the gaming community may be beyond my reach, but I can choose how and where I will add my part. If that means totally leaving the online gaming community so be it. More than likely I will stick around in the background playing against friends at LANs and helping with art and other things where people respect other people's differences.
Some of you will say, "Dude, you are blowing this all out of proportion, take it with a grain of salt! If I thought someone was (insert rude insensitive comment here), I wouldn't belittle them for it!!" That statement is true, which further shows the ignorance those people have over their words and the use of them, I don't believe most of the gamers would say something about someone just to belittle their race/religion/etc. So why do it at all? It's not what is said it's what is perceived to be said. Other people come in and read your comments and form their opinion of you on what you post. If all you do is post homophobic or racial slurs, then what do you think people think of you, just by your posts and topics??
As I said above, I can't control you but I can control where I waste my time.
