Subject: Quake 3 map usage

Hello,

I am new to tweaking the Quake III game. I have downloaded a few maps from
your site. From there, I have unzipped the files and placed the .pk3 files
into the "baseq3" folder. Upon running Q3, I can't find the maps on the
system. How do I achieve this?

Thank You Very Much,

Paul

Some maps unfortunately do not come with the necessary file to show up on your maps menu.  Once again I p1mp Q3Offline. You can view and choose your maps from their easy to use interface.

But, to simply use your maps, start your quake 3 game and then bring down the console and type the name of the map.  For example if you installed ztn3dm1.pk3, you would type this is console:

/map ztn3dm1

hit enter and off it goes.  To add bots to play against, simply hit ESC and choose bots from the menu.

Subject: Routers

Dear Quake2 Gods,

Please help.

I connected my router, and hub to my cable modem. And played quake2,
on 2 computers, on line, in the same game(server). And it worked fine.

I got a faster hub and replaced the old hub, and since then. I could not play in the same game on line with 2 computers. I can play separate games(servers) but not the same. I would be in the game(server) on one computer and then start up the game in the other, and it seems to make the first computer reconnect. Then neither one connects.

I tried everything. Please help.

What makes this difficult is not knowing what hub you replaced the old one with.  Obviously that hub has an issue. Something to be found in the manual or with Techsupport.

However, I wanted to address your email for another reason.  Overkill.  You have a cable modem, a hub and a router.  Talk about making a gamers life miserable.  The easier way to go would be to use the hub and cable modem and forget the router. I talk to too many people these days using a router and they are unable to game because of the ports that are closed now.  Using the hub and cable modem you would simply use Internet Connection Sharing provided in Win98SE, or a program like Sygate, a NAT based proxy that is as easy as can be to configure.

I just wanted to take a moment to stress that the paranoid need to stay out of gaming.  High security does not mix with the need to game.  Unless you know what you are doing, you are going to create the most frustrating situation imaginable for yourself in building a block wall and expecting to game from behind it.
