Subject: Quake 3 point releases

After installing the latest point release 1.27g, it appears that my video card (invidia riva 16MB) cannot handle this release. Basically, I get a lot of black boxes with white borders etc. I used 1.17 and 1.25 no problem. What's up with this? How can I uninstall 1.27 and use an earlier release or how can I correct the the problem with 1.27. I tried 1.27g then 1.27h to no avail. Has anyone else had a problem with this?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Bill

What the problem is Bill is what many gamers have experienced. Point releases 1.27g and h do not work well with 1.17 or 1.25 under them. You do need to uninstall and reinstall with ONLY 1.27g and h and all should be well again in Quake land ;-)

Subject: Quake 3 Mod Menu

Hey,

I bought quake3 v.1.11, so naturally i wanted to upgrade to 1.27h. I downloaded and the point releases and installed them in order. But NONE OF THE MODS COME UP IN THE MENU!!!!! Can you please help me!

-Draco

Problem: did you upgrade your mods? While you had mods that were fine and dandy with 1.17, they are not compatible to 1.27. If the mod authors so decided, they updated their mods to be compatible to 1.27 therefore requiring you do download their update. Otherwise, if they did not update then that mod is dead to Quake 3's future.

how do i adjust quake 3 to take advantage of the ram i have available? I think Q3 only uses 64 MB , Ive got 384mb pc150 and An A7V Raid hosting a AMD 1.2 G CPU (266 bus) voodoo5 30 gig maxtor 7200 rpm ata 100 scsi cdwr and dvd 12x but things are still just " O.K. " any help you can send my way would be GREAT thanks, Drew

In your q3config.cfg is a bind for hunkmegs. Open q3config.cfg with Wordpad and adjust it. You can start with any number above default (56) and try it out. Be careful though, you'll get an error if you go too high. But it really is personal preference and feel for the size of your maps. When you decide on the right one, right click your q3config.cfg and make it read only. Now it will stay that way forever. If you don't, it will go back to the default setting of 56.

Subject: Quake 3 levels

Hi
Love your web site. I've been downloading some levels to try and play at
home, where we have 3 computers linked via LAN. I've extracted the zip files into the baseq3 directory, but still can't see the levels on the menu when I go to create a new game. Why can't I see it? Do I have to use the console operator?
Thanks

David

The problem here is that not all levels were packed with a preview file. That means you have to write them down and execute them on your own from just "knowing" they are there. Otherwise, get yourself Q3Offline and manage your custom level play the easy way. I just can't p1mp those guys enough!

Subject: What mouse?

I've been playing Quake for quite a while now and was wondering if an after-market mouse would make a difference in playing the game. Right now I'm using a Microsoft two button mouse with a scroll wheel. What would you recommend for a high quality mouse to improve my game. Thanks for your help.
Piazza[G-Kar]

My personal belief is that the mouse does not improve your game that much. It really is skill and reaction time on your own accord. It's about anticipating the enemy and predicting his movement. My experience has been that it only takes a few face-offs with one player to see his style of play. Then you have him.

However, there are some important things to note about your gaming extras. Your mouse has to roll well and definitely, the wheel was the best invention ever for weapon changing. Your mouse needs to be smooth and have excellent response time to your movements. Some people have complained that the optical mouse has low rsponse time, other claim it is fabulous. Again, this is just something you will have to experience for yourself.

Then there is the mousing surface. No, I didn't say mousepad, I said surface. The mousepad as we know it is not the tool of the experienced gamer. The mousing surface is. Mice glide on a hard surface, the sludge on those cushy, greasy mousepads. Yes greasy. Ever notice that dark build-up? That is oil from your hand on the mousepad. That does not build up on a mousing surface. My preferred mousing surface is the Ratpad. Everyone I know that I have recommended this surface to has remarked on their improvement in gaming because of the freedom in movement it gave them.

Now use this to send those troubles and woes to TechTips!
