Happy Tax Season!
Ok, maybe not. Had to say something at the most painful time of the year though. I would also like to make sure all our
readers are aware there are BIG changes going on over at GameSpy Arcade. Now you have heard about it, you
may have even tried it. But what is happening now is the complete merge of Mplayer with Arcade. The two Kings of online gaming community chat and
browsers are finally becoming ONE.
It's time for those of you who have always wanted to ask questions, or those who wanted to have more gamer
friends to get online and do it. Oh, forums are nice but face it. Sitting there clicking the refresh button for the next person's response can be
nerve racking. On GameSpy Arcade you can get to know your fellow gamers more, discuss strategies,
learn better moves and find out where to get the best tools and add-ons (PlanetQuake of course) for your Quake.
So scoot on over to the GameSpy
Arcade website and pick up a copy and get in on the action now! They have the details of the merge too, go see!
Ok, so Happy Easter then ;-)
Subject: Quake 2 hook usage
I am pretty new at playing quake 2 online and I getting soundly beaten - due
alot to my ignorance of how to use or implement the grappling hook!
Everyone in the mods i play uses it and i have no idea how to!
Can you please help me or tell me where i can find out how?
Thanks so much
Ok, I feel a small lesson coming on. The first thing you need to do is establish what key bind would be easiest
for you to execute the hook. Keep in mind that the hook and you are *one*. It needs to be a part of your movement as easily as strafing or shooting. Most
gamers I know, including myself use mouse 2 for hook. It takes some getting used to if you never use mouse 2 because you accidentally shoot instead of
hooking. But with practice you get better.
Once you have chosen a key bind, join an empty server and start practicing. It is difficult to practice a CTF game by
yourself (doh) so try Lithium. It's teh hook, not the grapple but it will still give you practice. What you are looking for in skill is the
ability to move, hook up to a destination while firing at the enemy. Do NOT hook yourself up to a location to camp or to sit and shoot. You will die. That
is sitting duck material. Using the hook is used as a strategy to hook yourself away from danger and turn on your enemy by surprise.
Being a hook monkey is another skill that takes MUCH practice. A hook monkey is someone who basically never touches the
ground. They hook their way through an entire map. Never actually facing their opponents. These are people that really have a feel for the hook and I have
the feeling that many use a joystick as well. Point is, you have to practice. It takes getting used to. Don't forget our Quake
2 Configs have what you need to figure out your binds.
Subject: Modem ping
I was searching the internet sight for a free way to impove my ping when i came up this sight... erad's
Modem site and i was hoping you maybe you take a look at it and tell me if there is any truth to this kind of thing or if i should try it myself
or if it could just be a bad joke to screw up people computers. I have a 56k modem and while i play quake 2 i usually get about a 250 ping and this
says i might be able to get into the lower 100's but this sounded a little too good to be true. So could you please tell me if it is the real deal? I
would greatly appreciate it if you would reply to my E-mail. Thanks you very much for your time and happy easter!
I have absolutely no need to go look at Erad's site. It is the most recommended site in my daily work for all gamers who
need 56k modem tweaks. I started using it way back when. When I had a 56k modem. And still send many many people there every single day.
Subject: Video crash on Win2k
I'm running a PII 400, Voodoo 3 2000, SB Live 256MB RAM, Promise ultra 66
HDD Controller Dual boot WIN2K WIN98SE Wicked GL Drivers.
After running Quake 3 with any patch after 1.17. (I pretty sure it was this
one might be mistaken but no problems before it) under WIN2K. Windows
crashes to a black screen This also happens with Team Arena although it will
sometimes start, but not all the time. (Also happens with Unreal) is there
any known fix or will I have to install under 98? The performance under 2k
is much superior and would prefer not to run under 98 as I do 99% of my work
Question is have you gotten the latest drivers for your Voodoo3 for Win2k? I am not
positive that I would recommend WickedGL for Win2K users. In my opinion, the latest Win2k OpenGL drivers are recommended. You can pick them up at Reactor
